Isn’t it awesome that we get a day off from work or school to celebrate the man who discovered America?
Yeah right…
Columbus Didn’t Discover Anything
How can someone discover a land which was already inhabited by millions of people? The story is told as if the Europeans were the protagonists and the Native Americans were wildlife encountered along the way.
Columbus was a Pirate
Hollywood depicts a cartoonish image of a pirate who went about with a parrot on his shoulder and perhaps a peg leg saying “arr matey” no matter what his native tongue.
Hollywood was named after Merlin’s staff. Their job is to put a spell on us. Want to watch a program?
Columbus was sanctioned by the Spanish throne to “discover” new lands and pillage them. The only difference between his crew and a pirate ship was that pirates didn’t give any of their spoils to the king.
The People’s History, by Howard Zinn reveals gruesome eyewitness accounts (some of which were from Columbus’s own logs) of horrible things that Columbus and his men subjected native peoples to.
I am always leery of revisionist history which intends to demonize the European man, however; much of that trend was spawned not only by the evil doings of Columbus and his men, but by the curriculum, which intentionally mislead generations of students.
Columbus didn’t prove the Earth was round
The reason Native Americans are falsely called Indians to this day is because Columbus thought he had landed in India, thus circumnavigating the globe to East Asia. To the Day Columbus died he maintained that the islands he landed on, later to be known as the West Indies, were actually off the coast of East Asia.
Columbus Day Is Not A Holiday
A holiday is a day of festivities which is Holy in essence. So essentially Columbus Day is an unholy day or an unholiday. Would it be any different to commemorate a holiday for Cortez or Charles Manson for that matter?
I know to some of you this topic may be old hat, but lots of adult Americans still have no idea that Columbus brutalized and enslaved the Native American peoples, yet for some reason it still remains a national holiday.
What can You or I do about it?
Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.
